Fieldwork

Wang Ruobing

Fieldwork conventionally means the collection of raw data outside a laboratory, library, or another such workplace environment. Through the lens of contemporary art, fieldwork consists of archiving materials and ideas outside of a closed studio space. Through various forms of exploration such as story-telling, recording sounds and interviews, visual observation, site-specific installations, collaboration and scientific experimentations, fieldwork inspires students to create art across different media. The outcome may not necessarily be a traditional art piece, but it is a work created from the information gathered from the outdoor world. These works reflect not only the artists, but communities and institutions.Through lectures, field trips to selected urban and non-urban, and discussions, this elective adopts fieldwork as a methodology for research and practice.
