Zheng Jialei
Zheng Jialei (b. 2001, Singapore) is a multidisciplinary art practitioner who concerns herself with diaspora and the fragmentation of cultural identity. Born to immigrant parents, her sense of displacement inspires her to investigate loss and trauma. Jialei hopes to reconnect with her roots in an age of urban amnesia by exploring mediums such as Chinese ink, oils, found objects and creative coding. Her current practice revolves around the assimilation of rituals into urban spaces, familial bonds and burdens, and the body as a place of spiritual healing.

I Think About You All The Time
Medium:
White papers and board, masking tape
Dimension:
The trauma of one generation always passes down to the next. This work is inspired by denunciation rallies- a kind of violent, public exhibit that victims of Mao Zedong's China go through during the Cultural Revolution. Jialei has been haunted by stories of her grandfather receiving such punishments, and she puts her body through similar pain to share the burden of a distant past. Looking at how the act of prostration can morph from humiliation to paying respect, Jialei views this work as a moment for reconciliation and healing.
