Kang Ah Young
Kang Ah Young (b.1996, Seoul) is an emerging artist who graduated from Diploma in Fine Arts with distinction and is currently in her final year of BA(Hons) Fine Arts programme at LASALLE College of the Arts. Even though her niche is in oil painting, she is beginning to expand her practice as a multimedia artist by further exploring other mediums such as mixed media and installations. Her practice revolves around her identity, growth, and recurring feelings of displacement as a non-local in Singapore. Through her deeply personal and engaging confrontations with identity crises and sense of displacement—themes that are prevalent in this day and age—she hopes her sentiments resonate with her audience and are able to provide a form of comfort. Her artworks have been shown exhibitions such as ‘Project 3V - Visualise, Voice & Vision’, a Collaborative project between LASALLE College of the Arts and Sabanci University, at Fass Gallery in Istanbul, Turkey, and Earl Lu Gallery in SIngapore. She has also been awarded the Special Choice Award for the 41st Daegu International Grand Exhibition.

IdentiTree
Medium:
Tree branches, thread, paper cord.
Dimension:
Variable
By using organic tree branches, the artist expands upon an idea from previous paintings she completed for her diploma graduation project. The idea stems from her belief that the symbol of the tree has a deep cultural and personal connection to her identity. By hanging the tree branches from a thread, she explores the movement of the branches and the ways in which thread and paper cord as base structures resist the weight of the branches. The work aims to convey the significance of thread, rooted in the traditions in her hometown, Doljabi. This tradition is practiced during a child’s first birthday celebration, where the child is encouraged to grab one or two items from a selection of objects, each representing a future career path or lifestyle. A thread also represents life's longevity, a quality that parallels a tree's enduring presence.
