Cheng Wei Yi
Cheng Wei Yi (b. 2001) is a young artist based in Singapore. Wei Yi is driven to understand the basics of what makes us human- our emotions and physical being. Her fascination with mental health and identity is often explored in her works through the use of a wide-ranging scope of materials. Her most recent works revolves around the idea of memory and igniting nostalgia through digital media. Her artworks were shown in several exhibitions in Singapore. She was awarded first place in the SG50 Doodle Challenge in 2015. In 2017, she was awarded semi-finalist in the Khaled bin Sultan Living Ocean Foundation's Science Without Borders Challenge. Looped animation and 5 physical cards
Dimension:
Memes are images or statements that are used as a starting point for discussions. As defined by Saint Hoax, a meme can be defined as "... a piece of media that is repurposed to express a cultural, social, or political message, mainly through humor, by repurposing a piece of media." Utilising the "Choose Your Fighter" meme format, hamsters in various poses popularised by memes are featured on Pokémon-inspired card templates. The hamsters' powers are inscribed with popular culture quotes and images, aiming to convey how information is constantly repurposed and recontextualised online in the internet era. Often times, the repurposing of content to make it humorous acts as an escape for Generation Z from their harsh realities, with meme culture being a direct result of the stressful conditions of this age.
