Sound: A Mutual Tuning is designed to introduce learners to different notions of ‘sound’ as it relates to movement, performance, space, and narratives. Everywhere in the world there is sound, whether it is from nature or it is manmade. Rain, traffic, voices - it is all around us. This elective aims to experiment with the idea of ‘listening’ through experimentation. The class delves into sound manipulation, analysis and re-synthesis, combining sound and visuals, presenting and performing sound in the context of interdisciplinary art. Students keep a Listening Diary to pen down their thoughts and observations, and have discussions based on sound theory and practice, composition, and phenomenological observations. On a technical level, students learn to manipulate sound using digital programs and tools to record, edit, playback, and to create compositions related to their own practice.
